Q. Must A PASS Be Integrated Into A SCBA to be NFPA Compliant?
A. NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT. This misinformation is being disseminated in the marketplace as the truth but has no factual basis.

NFPA 1982 (1998 ed.) refernces three different types of PASS:

  • The Stand-Alone PASS.
  • SCBA --Integrated PASS -- Removable.
  • SCBA -- Integrated PASS -- Non-Removable.
Q. Is Automatic Activation Required by the Current NFPA Standard?
A. YES, Automatic Activation is Required for PASS to be NFPA Compliant.

The mode selection device shall be designed to provide automatic activation from the off mode to the sensing mode without the user setting the mode selection device.

Such automatic activation shall be permitted to be, but not limited to, linked to activation of SCBA, lininked to removal from storage or transportation positions, by pull-away tether to a fixed position, or by remote activation.
